ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting: Session SS73 Coupling long-term observations and experimental approaches to best address challenges emerging from global change

Date
22/06/2021 - 27/06/2021

Contributions are invited to an exciting special session at the ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting 22–27 June 2021:

SS73 Coupling long-term observations and experimental approaches to best address challenges emerging from global change

In this session, contributions addressing how to combine long-term observations & experiments in order to best address emerging grand challenges in aquatic ecology are invited. Contributions focusing on only one of the frameworks, if an outlook is given on how the presented approach and data could be strengthened by involving the other framework in the future are also encouraged.

Potential topics include:
  • Start from empirical trajectories, how to formulate testable hypotheses and test them at the best level of complexity (erlenmeyer flask, micro- or mesocosms)
  • Bridge the discrepancy emerging from studying short term vs. long term effects (e.g. shifts in demographic rates vs. compositional turnover at various spatial scales)
  • How to use experiments and experimental data to extrapolate from empirical trajectories into future ecosystems
  • Emerging modelling tools for simulating long term observational data, allowing for ‘virtual experiments’ (e.g. LakeEnsemblR)
  • Development of strategies for facilitating collaboration between observatories and experimental facilities
  • and more
